Accessibility on the Water: All You Need to Know About an Accessible Canal Cruise
We believe the beauty of Amsterdam's canals should be an experience everyone can enjoy. A historic city like Amsterdam presents unique challenges, but we work hard to make our tours as accessible as possible.
Here you will find the most important information for guests with limited mobility, particularly for wheelchair users.
Are all boats wheelchair accessible? Not all of our boats are accessible. Accessibility depends on the type of tour:
Accessible: Our larger, covered boats, which we use for the classic 1-hour canal cruise, are generally accessible for manual wheelchairs. These boats often have a wider entrance and a level floor.
Not Accessible: Our smaller, open-air boats (sloepen) are unfortunately not suitable for wheelchairs due to steps and narrow aisles. Culinary tours on special boats may also have limitations.
How can I book an accessible tour? We strongly recommend that you contact our customer service team before booking. Our team can tell you exactly which departure times and boats are accessible on your desired date. This allows us to ensure we are ready at the pier to assist you with boarding and to guarantee a smooth experience.
Are there restrictions on wheelchair size? Yes, due to the design of the boats, there are often limitations. Our accessible boats can typically accommodate manual, foldable wheelchairs. Electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters are often too large or too heavy. Please inform us of the dimensions and weight of your wheelchair when you contact us.
Are the piers accessible? Most of our main departure piers, for example at Central Station, are accessible from the public street without steps. However, the gap between the quay and the boat may have a small step or gap. Our staff is trained and happy to assist you with boarding and disembarking.
Are there accessible toilets on board? Most of our classic tour boats have toilets, but due to limited space, they are generally not fully accessible according to official standards.
Our Commitment to You We want to provide you with a wonderful and carefree experience. The best way to ensure this is through open communication. Please do not hesitate to call or email us. We are happy to discuss your individual needs and find the best possible solution for you.
